Happy St Patrick’s day from all the children at Monkey Puzzle Colchester.
We have been discussing the celebration of St Patrick’s day. Including ‘shamrocks’ and what they represent so from this we decided to create our own “Shamrocks” using paper plates and lots and lots of green paint. Some of the children used their hands and a paintbrush to spread the paint around the Shamrock templates, other took a trip across the green Irish Sea with green gloop and enjoyed sponge painting their Shamrocks, the children even made their own Shamrocks out of green playdough.
All in all, the children had a great day exploring many textures, making some amazing creations and learning something new through play. ... See MoreSee Less

We have had so much fun celebrating World Book Day in starfish today, our focus book was The Three Little Pigs. All the staff and children enjoyed dressing up as pigs and participating in a Three Little Pigs tuff tray activity, the children explored the dry weetabix using their fingers and hands to feel the texture. The children were introduced to words such as crunchy, crumbly and discussed the colour, the children were also exploring the different items such as wood and logs which are connected to the story.
Rainbow Dolphins celebrated World book day today with the book the Gruffalo. We made Gruffalo crumble which was made it bit harder by the Gruffalo as he kept trying to eat our Spoons and also the oats as we were trying to put them into the bowls and pans. We read the story of the Gruffalo and we thought it was funny seeing Chris dressed up as the Gruffalo.
The children in Dolphins have taken part in a range of different activities relating to The Gruffalo story, the children have had a tea party, been creating some delicious tiger food out in the garden and enjoyed reading the story and joining in themselves using the story sack.
Happy world book day from preschool! We’ve loved seeing everyone dress up as their favourite characters and really embrace the spirit of the day! We’ve had some lovely interactions and conversations: from everyone introducing themselves during key group time, to talking about our favourite books and singing their songs. We’ve had all kind of characters in our room today! We’ve caught bad guys with Spiderman, Batman and Robin, spoken to Thomas the tank engine’s driver, danced with the most beautiful princesses and even spotted a dinosaur and lion lurking around the corner. We’ve held dinner parties, told stories and built houses for each other too. It’s been such a magical day and everyone has helped make it so great! ... See MoreSee Less

Today in starfish we have been celebrating pancake day! By doing this they have enjoyed exploring our flour activity, creating their own ‘pancakes’ using different utensils and bowls, while developing their own vocabulary as we introduced words such as flour, pour, scoop and mix. This activity was great for the babies’ fine motor skills and communication.
It’s pancake day and we have been having lots of fun in Rainbow Dolphins, we started off using tennis bats as makeshift frying pans and pretended the bean bags were pancakes, then we tried our hand at flipping them, the children loved using their imagination to flip the beanbag pancakes. We have also had a fun time making pancakes using playdough, we pretended they were actual pancakes and even stacked them on top of each other. We looked at the various ingredients that you usually have in pancakes such as milk and flour and some of the children even used our home corner to pretend to cook the playdough pancakes, very clever idea!
The Dolphins children have been celebrating Pancake Day today, they all enjoyed creating their own pancake pictures by colouring in different pieces of fruit and talking about what they would like to put on their pancakes. The children then stuck their selection of fruits onto their pancake (paper plate). The children were introduced to new words such as flour, sugar & eggs and were talking about different fruits such as cherries, melon & grapes wondering how these fruits might taste.
Happy pancake day from our preschoolers. We have had various activities relating to this exciting celebration such as drawing and decorating our own pancakes on paper and discussing together the types of toppings including sweet & savoury, we discussed the taste of lemon, strawberries, banana and chocolate spread and other toppings as a few of our children mentioned what they had on their pancakes at home. The children all worked together to create a ‘playdough’ pancake using yellow paint with a hint of brown to give it the real pancake look, the children loved this. We then went for a walk around the nursery for our resources to add to our playdough pancakes such as glitter & sprinkles. We discussed the safety of making pancakes and how the oven is hot and so the pan will be too, we spoke about always asking a grown up to help us, after this, we all took turns counting down from 5 to flip our pancake in the frying pan. What fun we had! ... See MoreSee Less

Today in Starfish we have been celebrating St David’s Day. We have been looking at pictures of daffodils and dragons. The children then re-created their own pictures using their hands and fingers to paint onto the template using red and yellow paint to symbolise the dragons and daffodils.
Happy St David’s Day from Rainbow Dolphins, we have been looking at Dragons today as the flag of Wales has a red dragon on it, the children used coloured pencils to practice free drawing and decorate the pictures. We also had some real daffodils, that we looked at and smelt as well. The children said they smelt good.
Dolphin children have been creating their own colourful interpretations of St David day dragons and daffodils with colourful paints, we have been talking about what daffodils look and smell like along with what St David himself might have looked like.
In order to celebrate Saint David’s day, the preschool children have been talking about who he was - we discovered that he was a vegetarian who only ate leeks and drank water. We also found out that he performed miracles so we were discussing what we could do in nursery that would be our very own small miracles for each other. It prompted the loveliest conversations! We also found out that Wales is in the United Kingdom - right next to England! So, we practiced drawing the Welsh flag and some of us drew the most amazing dragons and daffodils, we think that they belong in museums! ... See MoreSee Less
